How do I avoid implant failure? What most patients don’t know

Full-mouth dental implant rehabilitation is a popular procedure in the dental world for those dealing with dentures, tolerating failing teeth, or hurting from gum disease and bone loss. It’s allowing people to take back their health starting with their teeth and feel more happy and confident again. Avoiding Implant Failure

One of the biggest questions we’re often asked at Anchored Dental Implants is how our patients can avoid implant failure. After all, no one wants to go through any additional procedures if they don’t have to. We have a few tips to ensure your implants last as long as possible and look great for many, many years:

Practice excellent oral hygiene

The most common cause of dental implant failure is peri-implantitis (the infection of the gum and bone around the implant site). This can happen for a number of reasons, but the biggest way to prevent it is by practicing great oral hygiene, brushing your new teeth twice a day and flossing regularly. The key here is to take care of your implants as if they were regular teeth. Some people believe they don’t have to brush or floss these implants anymore, and that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Treat these teeth well, and you shouldn’t develop peri-implantitis.

Visit the dentist regularly 

Don’t skip your regular dentist visits. They can help encourage you on your journey as you’re healing from your procedure and beyond as you adjust to life with implants. Your regular dentist is your first line of defense for oral problems and can help you if you’re having certain issues with your implants. 

Avoid (or stop) smoking

In case you needed another reason to quit, smoking is not great for your natural teeth, and it’s not great for your implants either. If you smoke after your implant procedure, smoking can impair the healing process as well as blood flow to the sites of your implants and cause potential implant failure. 

Stop habits that can damage your teeth

This covers a lot of things, but the main ones are chewing ice or other hard things (like popcorn kernels or hard candy) that can damage or crack your teeth. It’s one thing to enjoy crunchy things, but overall hard or sticky foods can damage your implants over time, ultimately causing failure. We’re not saying you can never eat crunchy things again, but practice caution if you enjoy these things.
